What are spirit guides
« on: November 05, 2010, 12:39:44 PM »
"Spirit guide" is a term used by the Western tradition of Spiritualist Churches, mediums, and psychics to describe an entity that remains a disincarnate spirit in order to act as a spiritual counselor or protector to a living incarnated human being.

Traditionally, within the spiritualist churches, spirit guides were often stereotyped ethnically, with Native Americans, Chinese or Egyptians being popular for their perceived ancient wisdom, saints, or enlightened individuals. Nevertheless, the term can also refer to animals or totems, controls, angels, or nature spirits.

According to theosophical doctrine, spirit guides are persons who have lived many former lifetimes, paid their karmic debts, and advanced beyond a need to reincarnate. Each is assigned to watch over an incarnate person, not only on this Earth, but on many other planets throughout the universe. Many psychics believe that spirit guides are chosen on "the other side" by us and God(s) before we incarnate and that they guide us to follow our life's plan because we want them to.

Very interesting post.
I have always believed in spirit guides, and although I'm not sure who they might be, I speak to them often and ask them to protect and/or heal me. I ask them to protect my loved ones and my beloved animals as well, even though I know that my loved ones and animals have their own spirit guides.

While I am not a huge fan of Sylvia Browne, I do read her books. I followed one of her meditations to find my spirit guide once, and it did seem to work. The name "Adonda" popped into my head during that meditation, so I feel that one of my spirit guides is someone named Adonda.

Many years ago after my second husband had passed away unexpectedly, a channeler sought me out to inform me that my late husband was one of my spirit guides. While I'm still not sure if that's true, it did comfort me to know that he was watching over me after his death.

I also believe in the idea about spirit guides or usually known as guardian angels. It was nice to read this discussion and know more about them. The guides are very likely to be spirits too that had experienced living on this earth and been assigned to guide a certain person.

I think the best description I have heard of what spirit guides are was they are the voice that guides us. That may seem a bit simple but I found it to be very true. Spirit guides are our conscious. They are the voice that tells us right from wrong. The are the internal voice that lets us know if the choice we are making is good for us. They are the internal advocate that helps us decide between hard choices.

Im not sure how I feel about spirit guides.  Especially if we are supposed to have chosen them ourselves.  Is it possible that I could have chosen the wrong one.  I haven't been feeling very guided lately.

I wouldn't necessarily say you have chosen the wrong one so much as maybe you might be relying on the one you have for everything. What I mean by that is that sometimes one spirit guide works well for someone whereas another person may have several spirit guides that help them with different aspects of their lives. If you feel that you are not being very guided lately maybe some meditation and opening your spiritual doors to more intercessory help maybe the answer. Don't close the door on your current guide by any means but open the doors wider to let others in.

Thank you girlvivalistmeg for responding to my post.  I think I need to educate myself more on the concept of spirit guides.   Opening my spirit makes sense in theory, its the application that I will have trouble with.

I don't know if it will help but try to remember when opening your spirit that you are both there. You are already ready and accepting. Your guides are already ready and accepting. Think of opening your soul during meditation or just in general as turning on a lighthouse light and giving a beacon or signal light that tells your spirit guide "I'm here just follow the signal."

Has anybody here got any stories to tell about communicating with their spirit guide? I love to hear these kind of stories as they are usually so positive and enlightening.
