A short question with a long answer but I will try to be brief.  Angels were created before man by our creator or God essence.  The role of angels is varied but many angels have been created specifically with the purpose of looking after Gods children us.

An angel is a spiritual being created by God, without a body, for the service
                                                        of Christendom and the Church.
                                                            Martin Luther (Table Talk)

I do not believe Angels are men or women, they are just Angels.  There are also good and bad Angels. After all, the devil was an Angel.

What i've learned from the bible is that angels were indeed created before man was. They are God's servants and one of their purposes is to minister for God's children. They do our bidding when we speak in line with God's word because they hearken to the word of God, even when that word emanates from a man's lips. They are powerful beings, not the cute little things they're often portrayed as, and they do warfare in the heavenlies against the fallen angels who are now the minions of Satan. Their warfare affects the events on earth. Our heartfelt prayers infuence the outcome of their battles.

Sofree is right, angles were created before man and, because of this, are forced to live sinless lives. They have a hard time and, as I've heard from some Christians and Catholics, they despise humans for the fact we can be so clumsy with our lives and morals. Angels also watch us. Many think that angels are the cute flying things with halos and wings but they come in many forms to watch over us. They come as human figures such as bums on the street hungering for food or a lost child just to see what people will do or they can be auras and apirations... it all just depends but, to answer your question, angles are Gods "helpers" to watch over the Earth and His children. Atleast, this is what the Christian Bible says.

For me, angel is very abstract to define. It's like if we believe in God, then we also believe in His creature. They may say that angels are those with wing, based on what we usually saw in a picture, right? How those who are doing good? Can't we not call them angels?

The way that I understand it in the Bible is that the angel is a messenger from god and they do his bidding . And yes there are bad angels as well . Look at Satin the Devil he is a fallen angel

Angel's are the servant's of god. They are engaged by god in glorifying him.So they are also given a command to look after the children of god that is {you and me} So they have to do.

In simple words Angels in that they are messengers of God, they have no free will, and can do only what God orders them to do. Angels can take on different forms and sometimes they used to take on human form also.

In short:

An angel is an energetic being / entity.
All the energetic beings have duties in
the existance of the entire reality.

There are billions of billion of energetic beings.
Each one has its own duty to maintain the reality as we know it.
These entities are divided into several groups where each group takes
a certain role such as maintaining the matter and substance,
such as maintaing the connections between people, such as
maintaing the exact distance between earth and the sun and so forth.

One of these groups is called "Angel" or "Angelic".
Most of the time, their full-name contains the name "Or".

"Or" in hebrew means "Light" (such as enlightenment).
Examples: Names such as "Or-El" = The light of God, "Or-Yom" = The light of the Day, "Or-Ion" etc.

As I already mentioned there are a lot of groups of these entities,
all take part in god's creation and all are important.

A man can communicate with these beings:
It can occur in dreams, in imaging / visioning,
it can happen in channeling etc.

This was of course in a nutshell,
Have a great day.

Cool man, I think it was really too short explanation (lolz). Anyways, nice points are quoted but they don't define 'angels' on a complete basis. You need to get through the views of others also mentioned above, for better understanding.
