Is an atheist afraid of ghosts?
« on: July 15, 2009, 07:33:05 AM »
Just curious. Because an atheist doesn't believe that anything non-physical exists. If you are an atheist, do you ever feel funny or strange when you are alone in a so-called eerie place, for instance in a cemetery at midnight? I believe in God and I don't believe in ghosts, but I will avoid those places LOL. What about you?

... that's a strange thing to say - that because an atheist doesn't believe in a god/creator then automatically they mustn't believe in anything "non-physical".

well i'm an atheist, and i know that ghosts and divine creatures exist. it's not often i'm frightened by what i sense around me though.
if all you see is 'suffering' then that is all you will feel. look for what is better in yourself and see only that.

I wouldn't have thought that atheists would necessarily not believe in paranormal activities either.

I can imagine having a belief system shaken up and re-evaluated after something unexplained happened, though.

I don't like so called ``ghostly`` places but there aren't ghosts. It's normal to be scared when it is dark or you are alone. Human is scared of pretty many unusual things. You aren't used to see wolves, bears or snakes, so you're afraid of them, you aren't used to be alone in a dark building or forest, it is normal to be afraid.

God and Evil are two sides of the same coin of world. I think if someone don't believes in God, its also not possible for him to believe in any spiritual power or ghost.

well, i don't believe in a 'god'/creator. and i've always known the existence of spirit, mortal and non-mortal.

Non physical beings exist and it doesn't mean that an atheist doesn't believe in these beings. I am not quite sure why one supposes that just because they don't believe in the existence of God, they don't believe in anything else that is spiritual either. Nevertheless, I believe in Spirits and many other non-physical beings. I also feel discomfort at certain places in the dark, but this doesn't have anything to do with ghosts as I know that when I am surrounded by the love and light, no evil spirit can do me harm.

I really believe in existence of some supernatural powers in this world. There is so much unpredictable in this world. Last day I was reading an article about Billy Milligan-a man with 24 personalities. He was a man tormented by twenty- four distinct personalities battling for supremacy over his body.

There are certain things for which Science can't found an explanation. I have heard about Project Blue Book by U.S. Army to find some evidences about U.F.O. and their existence. There are persons who treat persons with their healing powers without even touching them.

Well I would like to say that if a person believes in ghosts and paranormal things then he is fooling himself and not others. If the supernatural powers exist, they are due to GOD. HE is the one who created everything and told us to believe in HIS creations and if someone denies the presence of GOD then he/she should find the answer of a simple question that what happens to a person after the death?

I recently learned that atheism just means non belief in God. It does not necessarily mean non belief in ghosts or anything else. I guess there are atheists who are afraid of ghosts just as there are atheists who are not afraid of ghosts.

Atheist, Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, whatever religion you subscribe to, I think anyone would be a bit intimidated if a being showed up that has already transitioned. I don't think your religious denomination would matter if you saw one. What would matter is how quick you can get to the bathroom before you shyt your pants.

What's your take on that?

I would say that pretty much sums it up, unless of course your religion believes that the wearing of pants is optional.

I agree with the others that claim that atheists can indeed feel strange in certain "scary" situations, and that being an atheist does not mean believing that nothing that is non-physical exists.

I don't believe in ghosts so no I'm not afraid of them. People fear the unknown. So, if you go to a dark unfamiliar area and you are scared, it's probably a fear of the unknown, not the supernatural. imo.

I agree with both of you, too. I know people who believe in a god, but don't believe ghosts really exist....just the same as I know people who don't believe in a god an consider themselves atheists, but believe there are supernatural things that happen that can't be explained yet. I don't think that's tied to one religion or another, or the lack thereof.
