Best way to fight negative thoughts?
« on: August 26, 2009, 04:33:56 PM »
Feeling and thoughts are changing with every moment of your life. Most part of our energy wasted in fighting against negative thoughts. Which do you think is the best way to fight such thoughts in Buddhism?

the first step is to realise that the emotions behind such thoughts are counterproductive, and tend to exaggerate the situation in one's mind. once this is realised, with practice you will begin to automatically reassess the situation and your outlook, and underlying emotions, will be mollified.
if all you see is 'suffering' then that is all you will feel. look for what is better in yourself and see only that.

Its not that much easy to jiggled your negative energy arises due to such negative thoughts. The best thing is to change your environment and then go for a good practice of inner transformation like meditation popular in this religion.

changing you environment does not necessarily change you or your thinking habits. recognising negative emotional responses and how they cloud an issue and being patient with yourself as you seek to change leads to inward changes. so that even if your outward circumstances do not change, your inward perceptions do not compound the situation and make it worse.
if all you see is 'suffering' then that is all you will feel. look for what is better in yourself and see only that.

Sometimes outer circumstances and environment impart a strong impact on your thinking. Its not possible for you to concentrate to work on bad side of yourself  without get rid of negative environment and people. One even can't meditate in a destructive environment.

the first step to change is to desire change. this in itself is an inward and not external influence.

I find that meditation and repeating positive affirmations that resonate with us help quite a lot. However, affirmations should not be pronounced in a robotic manner - they must contain emotion and we must actually believe in what we say. There are many ways to change our thoughts towards more positive ones but one must keep in mind that resisting them will make them even more stronger. Hence it is best not to ''fight'' but recognize, accept and then take the steps to change them.

I have joined few Meditation classes in past and the first chapter they told me was that one need a peaceful and sweat environment to concentrate for Meditation. Since its a practice to fight with your inner devils, I think circumstances and surrounding play a crucial role in inner transformation of your soul.

meditating in a quiet place is recommended to people learning techniques because it reduces external distractions while one is still learning to "quiet" the mind.

In presence of external disturbances, its sometimes hard to fill up the gap between you mind and body. A calm place helps in achieving a good concentration to bring a break over your flow of thoughts.

Sometimes we take decisions which we don't want to take due to struggle between our mid and body. A perfect man never hesitate in taking his decision. That's why Buddha developed concept of mindfulness and meditation as a tool to feel this gap between mind and body.

i am actually learning about buddhism by reading books written by the dalai lama, and i have never come across this "concept of mindfulness" which is why i didn't immediately post on this thread. however i can say that buddhism does not believe that there is a "gap" between mind and body. such a notion is actually a direct contradiction to buddha's teachings.

I have read about this concept of Buddha in a magazine. It was  a story related to Buddha's life in which he states that one can become a true Buddhist by stopping flow of feeling and thoughts inside him which can only be possible by fillin gap between your mind and body.

as i say, i've focussed on books written with the authority of a leading practitioner of the faith. i did this because of the contradictions to be found from various other sources.
