Pray any time you want to in anyway you want to. One does not pray TO anyone or thing. One prays for balance, clear consciousness, compassion and empathy. The Buddha or another spiritual model may be invoked for the qualities one intends to strengthen through prayer. Buddhists use chanting but it isn't a hard rule. Whatever works. Getting a mantra from a teacher you have spent some time with (quality of time matters more than length of time) is a VERY strong prayer.

There is no any obligation how many times for a Buddhist to pray each day. You may do as many time as you want. The main thing is the Quality not Quantity matter.

The wonderful thing about prayer practice is that we can do it everywhere and anytime, transforming the ordinary and mundane into the Path of Awakening. Prayer enriches our lives with deep spiritual connection and makes every moment special, manifesting the Pure Land here and now.

For myself a prayer is something that is going on with every breath. We try to keep our God Conscious awareness open all the time. I feel like converting everything we do into a prayer, even the most menial tasks like cooking, cleaning and walking can help connect us closer to the Divine. I don't feel like separating the Mundane from the Spiritual anymore although ritualistic prayers help to get you into the Mode of walking the Path of an Enlightened Being..eventually.. Prayer is a very personal factor in our lives and should flow from the heart at all times.
