conflict between evolution and christianity?????????
« on: July 10, 2009, 02:23:39 PM »
the great doubt for me is that if jesus is really a god how can his words be false... for example the starting of the bible... the adan and eve concept.... it is proven by science that it is false... what do christians say for that?

I wonder if Jesus ever told about Adam and Eve. It is the Bible telling the story.
The Bible is a religious and devotional works and not scientific works. It is not to be interpreted literally. I think Adam and Eve represent a community, tribe or even nation of humans living in the early stages of this universe.

Jesus did not tell the story of Adam and Eve. It is in the Bible but you must remember that it is in the Old Testament. Also, the Bible was written by man. They are obviously not going to write something that came before them if they did not know about it, especially at that time.

I am a Catholic, yet I believe in evolution. However, I also believe in the concept of Adam and Eve.

I think that there also is a lot of discussion to be made over which books of the bible were canonized, and why, as well as which denomination of Christianity is being talked about.

And after all that, some fundamentalists still believe in the literal interpretation of the bible, while others view the stories as parables.

This is a very contentious area. I do not believe the creationist version of events, evolution makes complete sense to me. Are there any creationists here who may wish to argue otherwise?

I think obviously we have evolved over the centuries, but where did we come from in the first place? For something to evolve, there has to be a prototype for evolution to take place - so where did the prototype come from? I have no answer to this, and I've never read a really convincing explanation.

I am not nearly as knowledgeable on this subject as I should be.  However, I will give you my opinion on what my church teaches.  The Old Testament is not meant to be taken literally in all contexts.  It is also important to remember, that the Bible was written by man and in a different time.  Words and phrases could have different meanings.  For example, when it is said that God created the world in seven days, how are we to know if the word "day" to God means the same to us.

Science said we evolved from simple bacteria-like organisms, or microbes unseen by the naked eye. I wish they could explain how human knowledge and feelings or freedom to choose evolved from then on.

I also believe that words written should not be all  taken literally as meaning of words also changes through time. And its been translated by different people and it may be interpreted as per such person's own beliefs or knowledge.
I also believe in evolution as we can really have data just like history that we do evolve like knowledge. And I also believe that there is God who creates everything at the first place.

That's what I have a problem with as well - there's no well-rounded and convincing explanation from either side of the debate. Some things are explained, but others are skimmed over, and nothing seems to make complete sense. I'd love to be convinced one way or another, but I'm not expecting it to happen anytime soon.
