« on: August 01, 2011, 07:04:59 AM »
I am a practicing gnostic catholic. I know what this means to me but I am also aware that it means different things to different people and even to different gnostics. What does it mean to you?

I don't know much about Gnostic Catholicism, but I do know it's not Roman Catholic at all. Many of the first Christians were gnostics, and I believe it means knowledge or light. Essentially, gnosics are searchers of knowledge and truth. I have read many of the gnostic gospels, and recommend that every Christian and non-Christian read them. I wish more of the Gospel of Mary had survived. I appreciate how Gnostic Catholics accept women in a way that many other Christian denominations will not.

Please enlighten us. I’m not familiar with Gnostic Christianity at all. And how do the Gnostic Catholics accept women that are different from Roman Catholics?

Since I attended a Catholic seminary, but did not get ordained for personal reasons. I am going to answer this the best I can. Gnostics believe in the original teachings of Jesus Christ. A gnostic believes that Jesus Christ revelled the way of salvation through His teaching and salvation is not gained through the church, like a lot of Roman Catholics believe.

Gnostic Christians believe that the knowledge necessary for salvation has been revealed through Jesus Christ. Gnostics recognize that this world is subject to powers of darkness that distort our concept of reality. As Jesus explained, "The shadows of this world are perceived by mortals, and they think they know the Truth, but the Reality which casts the shadows is hidden from them, and they do not perceive the Light."

When gnostics speak of salvation, they mean being freed from these illusions of darkness so that they can perceive Reality. As Jesus said, "I tell you the truth when I say that only when you perceive shadows as shadows, and search the Light, will you perceive the Reality which is God."

He also said, "If you continue to acquire gnosis through me and live by the principles I teach, you will be my true disciples. Then you will learn of Truth, and Truth will set you free."

This is how I see a Gnostic Christian. Is this what you believe?
