Why do non-Christians Celebrate Christian Holidays?
« on: September 18, 2011, 11:58:32 PM »
Around the time of Christmas and Resurrection Sunday I always ask myself this question and others. Such as, how and why advertisers and department stores decide to use Christian holidays to push their merchandise and why we as Christians let it happen. It is really out of hand. Christian holidays are not what they could and should be. The term holiday is taken from two words: Holy and Day and seem to mean nothing anymore. It really makes me wonder why. No other religions Holy Days are commercialized and secularized like Christmas and Resurrection Sunday. We have 365 days in a year (366 in leap years). Couldn't someone have picked another day?
Sincerely in Christ,
Leesa C.

I understand completely, and can relate in other ways, when it comes to non-Christians celebrating Christian holidays. I have a stepdaughter who proclaims to be atheist, yet every Christmas and Easter, she expects gifts...and gets them. Not from me however...as I know she cares not about the meaning behind Christmas or Resurrection Sunday, just about getting gifts. It's most frustrating.

All I can say is that I am thankful that the Christian holidays are still the largest and most celebrated ones. You have a huge opportunity to witness on these Holy Days. One day we will not be able to have these celebrations in the open. A few years ago Tyson foods made Labor day a regular work day in favor of making an Islamic holiday a paid day off for the workers in the US. After much consideration, and a huge backlash when the decision was made public, the company recanted. Labor day is back as a paid holiday and the workers now receive paid personal time that they may use for any reason including religious holidays, birthdays, etc. This will happen more and more until it is no longer important for companies to allow their workers time off for Christmas. I welcome any non-Christians to celebrate Christmas with me. Chanukah, Kwanzaa, whatever you celebrate, come to my house for the holiday so I can tell you about Jesus.

I personally feel that it is an insult to Christianity that the holidays are so commercialized. It just saddens me that marketers have jumped on the band wagon to make these times about how much money is spent on decorations, gifts and other commercial items.

I agree that it is a time to bear witness. However, it seems that it can be a real challenge to do so when so much focus is on the commercial aspect of things.

I just try to focus more on the spirituality of it all and less on the commercialism, greed and money hungry advertisers.

I find it insulting that the Christian holidays have been turned into excuses for spending money and I'm not even Christian. I don't understand why you would celebrate the birth of Christ if you're not a member of the religion, and there really isn't any Christ in Christmas anymore. I feel like religious holidays and shopping celebrations should be kept separate, no matter which religion it is. I wouldn't be happy if marketers started using Yule or Beltane as an excuse to make money.

I've also wondered why non-Christians celebrate Christian holidays. I especially wonder about those who verbally state they are extremely against the belief of God.

I've heard people say they are excited about Christmas and how they are excited about decorating, the parties and the gifts. To me, it makes a mockery out of the whole concept of Christmas.

Christmas is one of the most celebrated holidays of the year, yet so many do not celebrate it in the intended way. What exactly are people celebrating if not the birth of Christ? They can go out and shop any day of the year. They can exchange gifts, have parties and decorate any time of the year. For any celebration, there is a distinguishable concept. For Christmas the concept is celebrating the birth of Christ.

Not to rain on your morally just parade or anything but people have celebrated the 25th of December since before Christianity; as a matter of fact most Christian holidays are adapted from varying pagan traditional celebrations. As to why everyone enjoys Christmas whether or not they're Christian... well why not? It's a time to celebrate, some people celebrate the birth of Christ, others simply enjoy giving and receiving gifts...I don't really see the problem.

I think it's odd as well.  It's interesting to see how Easter is getting increasingly commercialized.  In the last few years I've noticed advertisement for gifts on Easter.  As a kid, we visited family, went to church with them, did an Easter egg hunt, then maybe ate some jelly beans.
But if companies moved away commercializing Christmas, it would largely be Christian groups that complain.  The so-called "War on Christmas" is simply people moving away from the commercialization of it.
As for work holidays, I think floating holidays is an excellent idea.  People of all faiths can get the appropriate days off.

I think most people get away with it by forgetting the true meaning behind them. On Easter, we have the Easter bunny and Christmas we have Santa Clause. These two characters make the holidays less about Christ and more about "false idols" in a sense. Therefore, it's easier for those who aren't Christian to celebrate Christian holidays.

This has been a problem throughout history. Business people using religious events to commercialize or sale their products. They have even went as far as making sure they have products designed for the event. Look at what Jesus did to the money vendors at the temple. Perfect example of what is going on today and throughout history.

On a lighter note, many people are really looking forward for Christmas because it is indeed the season of giving and getting together with friends and families. Holy Day it is and I believe Christ wants us to celebrate with Him together with our love ones, to share love and happiness. Many people would save for the occasion to give more. And yes, let’s welcome the non-Christians who want to celebrate with us the birth of Christ. Let us attend the mass and pray for each other to share ourselves as Christ give his self to us since He was born.

Catwoman is right when she says to celebrate the non-Christian celebrating this glorious holiday. It may even open the door for one of us Christian's to tell them about our beliefs and even have a few of these non-Christians accept Jesus Christ. Now that would be a good thing, wouldn't it?

Yes I hate that basically I mean if you claim to be one religion then you should stick to it. The holidays all have meanings and there are people that sit up and just celebrate them just to get stuff. I do not understand why they even do that when they can upset their own beliefs. Well I have to say if that is what it is then they will be the ones answering on judgement day. We have not control over anything that others do and we may never even understand.

I coudn't have put it better myself. If people get together and spend time with their families - whatever their religion - it is an affirmation of the power of the family in honour of the most important family that ever existed. Even if people don't come to Christianity as a result, at least they are showing love to their family, and that's the cornerstone of Christianity, isn't it?

Such a silly question, let me turn it around for you to understand what i mean, let me ask you-- -Why do Christians not behave more like their Christ who they adore so much? why are there christians who are prostitutes and drug addicts?, Why are some christians like the westborough church?
