Gentle World
« on: January 01, 2012, 12:43:02 PM »
All creatures fear before danger, life is dear to all. When a man considers this, he does not kill or cause to kill - Gautama Buddha

To my mind the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. I should be unwilling to take the life of  a lamb for the sake of the human body. I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man - Mahatma Gandhi

I am in favour of animal rights as well as human rights. That is the way of a whole human being - Abraham Lincoln

I wish no living thing to suffer pain - Percy Bysshe Shelley

Until he extends the circle of his compassion to all living things, man wll not himself find peace - Albert Schweitzer

Thank you for sharing. It's all inspiring and I would reflect on them. One of Mahatma Gandhi's saying that I kept in my mind and heart is this, "BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD." This brings fire to my belief that everything should start with our self. In the now.

Would you mind letting me know where you found this quote?  I have never heard of it before.

The Gautama Buddha quote is from the Dhammapada.  A beautiful work and classic of Buddhist & spiritual literature. (Modern translations do vary and are not always in the spirit of the original text.
Juan Mascaro's translation is the best one from the modern era.)

All life is one:
Alas, because of lack of spiritual development, there are millions of people on earth who do not realise that the spirit which animates them is the same one that animates all creatures who share the planet with them. They do not see them as spirits with earthly bodies, just as they are - Silver Birch

Surely we should be kind to animals. Such as preventing animal cruelty and abuse. But there is a quote in the Bible which states..."Rise Peter kill and eat". So there seems to be permission granted, to provide for food for humans as it were. Cheers.
