Please help, on depression/suicidal tendencies
« on: January 28, 2012, 05:48:13 PM »
Hi everyone!

I have a younger brother (18 years old) who's been depressed for a few years recently. On occasions he's been suicidal (he was close to attempting it but never actually did). We have visited many psychiatrists but there's been no significant progress (except a diagnosis of probable Asperger Syndrome). He's also been prescribed antidepressants and taken them for close to 2 years and they seemed to help a little (or not, we're not quite sure) but still I feel something must be done on a deeper level.

For the past 1 year he's been quite stable, although still depressed and very occasionally suicidal. He seems to have accepted the depression as part of him. Even during his most depressed times, he still says he finds it fine and it doesn't bother him if he lives or dies.

He is intelligent and was always questioning the meaning of life. He has very few friends. He is completely honest and never cares to give a diplomatic answer about anything.

I observe that my father and myself are slightly autistic - we're quite nerdy and anti-social B-) so it seems to run in the family.

Lately my brother hasn't wanted to eat or drink or do anything. He sometimes lies in bed for days doing nothing except getting up for quick meals or the bathroom. One time he got hungry enough to feel cold and tremble but it doesn't bother him either. He is curious to explore that feeling, and he says it makes him comfortable - the fatigue from hunger.

So, I'm worried about him, mostly about the suicidal tendencies and his explorations with hunger. I've been talking to friends who are spiritual practitioners, psychologists, and I'm meeting some Buddhist monks in the next few days, but I also love to hear from you all about what you think of our situation. Any thoughts and advice?

Thank you very much!

He needs a purpose in life. Something to live for. Is he an animal lover? Is he passionate about the environment? I'm thinking some sort of service project...

Is he artistic? Creative? Maybe if he found something through which he could express himself...

Support from family and friends will help him to be reminded that there are always someone who love and care for him. And there will be always reason to keep living. I think it is important that he know he was valued and he have a purpose and role in this life. He need to reach out to more people or more people needs to reach out to him. And also improving his spiritual faith can give him more hope.

to Knightofalbion and zararina, thanks a lot for your replies!

he's quite indifferent to most things, including animals and the environment, in fact it's hard to find something of interest to him these days. he also doesn't have many friends.. i really hope he meets a good friend some day.

I saw a doctor on CNN who was speaking about the great progress he has seen with his patients, who suffer with depression. He said that he was treating them with Omega-3 Fish Oil capsules. The results he stated were very positive. You might want to try and see if this would help. Clincical depression needs to be treated by a doctor, it is very pernicious. My mother suffered with depression, and she needed her medication to deal with it. Good luck.

Hi ohvnaq,

Maybe its about a year since you posted this. My daughter had the same condition. I treated her by Ayurveda and since I couldnt live in India for long, now I am treating her by Natural medicines with the support of English medicine. She had recovered and is nearly normal.
She was treated with a mebendazole and pyrantel embomate(english medicines) together for worms that robs her nutrition. I gave her magnesium glycinate, CoQ10, Selenium, Zinc, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B complex to replenish her lost nutrition and to reduce her fatigue, All these supplements were bought from online health shops. She is probably 95% normal now.
Also treated her with Apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper, Instead of common laxatives I have given her Milk of Magnesia, some pharmacies make it up for you. Any questions please write to me .  I amvery happy to help someone as I know how distressed you would be.
