How Do You "Prove" Your Beliefs?
« on: August 04, 2011, 01:58:10 PM »
The world is changing, and so are peoples' beliefs.  How do you prove your beliefs that are based on faith when everyone is always asking for proof?  I am a Christian and believe in the Bible.  I don't have an explanation for everything, nor should I be expected to.  My religion and beliefs are based on faith.  You can't prove faith to someone.  So when I get asked to "prove my beliefs," all I can say is I have faith.  That is good enough for me and God.

I, too, do not feel I have to prove anything to anyone. I let them know my opinion, and then, I leave it at that. Anyone who keeps asking for proof, then proceed to tell you why you are wrong, is looking for a heated debate, and not a true answer to their question.

Same with me, I think and feel I do not need to prove anything in terms of my own beliefs since I am not forcing anyone to have the same beliefs. It is a preference and own judgements in different aspects. I do believe and I have faith, and that is enough proof for me. Life itself is full of unexplainable things, and we do not need to be able to explain anymore all about life, we just live.

I choose to keep my beliefs to myself because I know not everyone will understand them. All that matters is that I believe in them. If someone asks me to explain what I believe, I will gladly accommodate them. But I do not go around advertising and proselytizing, simply because I don't like when others do that to me. But if someone were to ask me to prove that my beliefs are valid, I would tell them that I can't, but that I know in my heart that it's true. Everyone believes in something, whether they can explain it or not.

I once had a friend tell me that beliefs are like the wind. You cannot see the wind, but you know that it exists through other means, such as a breeze rustling the leaves of a tree, or moving trash on the ground. The proof of the wind's existence is confirmed by its effect on the world around it. So if someone asks you to proof your beliefs, just give them that analogy!

You are rationally correct of course.  If you say, "I believe because I believe", then any argument afterwards is silly.  No evidence I can present will dissuade you from a belief that you hold to be true.  If I say to you that I believe in Unicorns what do you say?  Do you ask me to provide evidence of my belief?  And if no evidence if forthcoming and I simply restate the fact that my belief does not require evidence then how do you take that?  Would you say(internally) that my belief is irrational or do you respect it?

The bible says in Romans 10:17 that faith comes by hearing about Christ from the word of God.  There really is no way of proving the existence of God without faith.  The bible also says in Hebrews 11:16 that “without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him”. There are two reasons a person will ask for proof, which is because they are generally interested or they are looking to debate.  The only proof that we have is from the bible so I open my bible to the book of John and let the person read for their self.

I agree it is hard to really prove that your beliefs really work. I usually just tell them how I prayed and asked for God's help and how he successfully brought me out of certain situations. I guess I've seen too many people receive miracles that I can't help but to believe. There were many times I could have died, but God spared me. He keeps proving to me over and over again that he is real. Sometimes you do have to provide proof that God is real because he wants us to help build his kingdom. Believe it or not, we have a responsiblity to help people get saved. Unfortunately, I know this, but I'm not doing this myself... Therefore, I can't really push this issue!  ::)

You should not have to prove your beliefs. You belief in them because it feels right to you. A belief is something that is not absolute or cannot be proved with evidence. But in your heart you feel it is right to believe in or follow.

The definition of faith is belief, trust and the assent of the mind to Divine revelation.  That is not something you can prove.  It is something you believe and trust with your heart.  I think that if you want someone to see your side the best thing is to show them with actions.  Let them see the way you live your life and you devotion to your faith.

I’ve come across many people who question the existence of God and who keep on finding flaws in putting my faith and trust to what they say as a non-existent. “Where is God?”, they would ask. “What is your God?”

They would come up with many good explanations on how things come about through science even with the development of human from womb to tomb. Most of them God the Science; most of them put their faith on things tangible and with what they say as with reliable explanation.

It works for me to speak with the words of the Lord (taking from the Bible) because there is no contesting what God knows even before men learn about it. It works that I speak of the Lord and others see how He affects my life. If they see that how I live and what I am I owe to God and they see someone who’s faith has no falter, whose faith makes you a strong person and a beautiful person inside, soon enough they find it hard to not see God because if God governs your life, then God is real. That’s why they have this argument that God doesn’t exist because they are not open to God. They turn their back on Him not wanting to know Him.

Yes, keeping your faith up is the best proof that God is alive. More so in sharing and showing this faith to other people.

'But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
—Matthew 5:38-42

I believe in the supremacy of spirit over matter. Now there is no way you can prove that to anyone but yourself. I began by not reaching for the aleve each time I got a headache. I have stood on my belief in all area of life for many years now and I have gain a lot of confidence in the validity of my belief but it's a personal journey. I do believe that we who live by faith unknowingly influence others but as to being able to prove what we believe. No way!

It all boils down to actions. We have to act like our faith teaches. When asked I try to explain it this way. Do you check a chair to see if it is sturdy before you sit down in it. Most, if not all, people just sit down without checking and they take the chance that the chair will not break apart. That is faith. They have faith in the chair. Well, I have that kind of faith and more in Jesus Christ. Even if I could give you proof, some people would still not believe. It is your faith God cares about.

That's an excellent analogy, Eric - I must remember that. Most of the responders here echo my own opinion that I do not need to prove anything to anyone, as long as I have faith myself.  Faith is neither tangible nor visible, and therefore it cannot be proven. And there is no need for proof - a belief system has no potentially 'guilty' people, so save the burden of proof for the courts.

I do not feel the need to prove what I believe. My relationship with my God is between us both. But I do know I should conduct myself in a christian way. I shouldn't be a bad example of what God expects of me.

I don't feel like I have to prove my beliefs. I am an atheist so generally speaking, the only people who would even ask me to do that would be more religious people. I don't get into religious debates and I wouldn't ask someone else to "prove" their belief system either. We all have different opinions and to argue them is only natural, but I don't think most think they have all the answers or are able to provide lots of proof, so it just doesn't seem that important to me.
