It's a dangerous practice and can results in emotional disturbance if not performed accordingly. It requires a lot of practice and perception before performing it.

Hypnosis itself is not therapy. Instead, it is used to create a state of mind where the client and the therapist work together to bring forward inner processes like feelings, memories, images or wishes. It is these inner processes that can render the desired results.
When the client is in an hypnotic state of mind, the therapist can give suggestions that may help the client.

It should be performed after a regular practice and in presence of a specialist teacher. It would result in self destruction due to emotional disturbances because hypnosis would bring a modified state of mind.

Yeah, this is right we just gave it a yes and then just as an experiment we perform such acts. However, we neglect the negative side of it and the problems that may arise due to it. It sometimes create big risk and some problems. Its O.K from my side as a treatment but a big NO for any other thing.

I don't think its a good idea to go for such destructive methods when you have a great option like Meditation where you can easily achieve a modified state of mind with nearly no side effects.

I agree with your opinion and will indeed favour meditation in place of self hypnosis. It leaves the mind in peace and has no fear of side effects on you.

As a person who does practice Self Hypnosis I feel that it is very beneficial to help with non-physical problems.  A few people have responded here that it could be dangerous and that is just not possible.  Even a profession hypnotist can not make a person do something that they do not wish.

Meditation is used primary to find an insight to spirituality whereas hypnosis is basically retraining your reaction to thoughts.  An example regarding the fear of flight turbulence would be while relaxing keep repeating softly to yourself "When every I feel turbulence it reminds me that it is just like a car going on a bump.  When I experience it I will just relax more and more."

These are not the exact words I use myself, but you can get the drift of it.

I'm sorry, but I really don't see how that can happen. After all, you are not going to 'ill wish' yourself, are you? As another poster has said, even professional hypnotists with years of experience cannot fully control your mind, so how could you inflict self destruction on yourself? It just doesn't make sense.

Self hypnosis is not something I have ever tried, but having read more about it before responding to this post, it's definitely something I shall research further. After all, who knows you better than yourself?

I agree with those who do not think you can hurt yourself with self-hynosis.  After all, it is just an attempt to re-program the brain to lose bad habits and things like that.  Affirmations are sorta like that too.  I think they are wonderful but they haven't helped me that much with my issues.  Meditation does help a lot to keep one calm, centered, and focused.  It definitely relieves anxiety, which I think is huge.  There is a lot of stuff to trigger anxiety these days.  I think children can be taught the basics too, which includes breathing deeply from the belly (like babies do!  and singers who know better) and focusing only on that and dismissing all thoughts til later.   Children get very anxious from events at school and on the school bus.  They can be taught to relax and not worry about it so much.
