What is Ramadan, and what is it's real purpose?
« on: August 01, 2011, 05:59:45 PM »
I am obviously not Muslim, but I know that the month of Ramadan is approaching.  I have always wondered what the purpose of this month was.  i do not know any Muslims on a level that is personal enough to ask this question so I have decided to post it here.  I hope no one finds this to be offensive.

Curiousity is never offensive. :)
Ask all the questions you wish.

Ramadhan has already approached, as in, it's Ramadhan right now.

The purpose is ibadah/discipline. To better ourselves as Muslims and humans.
Allah swt has filled in this, the month of the Qur'an, many blessing. And many opportunities for us, our good deeds are elevated as worth more. Our weaknesses are more heavily outlined.

Allahu alim.

Thank you for responding to my post.  I have a few more questions if you don't mind.  I know that during the month of Ramadan you are supposed to read 1/30th of the Qu'ran...am I correct?  How is that done. In other words, how do you know when you have read a 30th.  I have a Qu'ran that I've only referenced, but I have not read it completely.  I understand that things can be taken out of context when read out of order, so I'd like to give reading it a try.  I figure a 30th a day can't be so hard.  Also, is it true that during Ramadan all of your sins are forgiven? I've heard or read this some where, I can't remember where, but I am curious about this.  And if this is the belief, how you come to believe this. Thank you kindly for your patience for my ignorance.

About the part of the reading of 1/30th of the Qur'an, this is what one is supposed to read per day, so that, in a month of 30 days, the Qur'an is finished. This is accomplished through a prayer known as Tarawih, which is performed after the last obligatory Muslim Prayer (Isha), every night during Ramadan. The goal is to finish the recitation of the Qur'an during these nightly prayers.

Thank you for your answer bhetajones, but how do you know when you have read a 30th?  Are there markings in the Qur'an that let you know where to start or stop?

I am not a Muslim also but there are lots of Muslims just near in our community.
Ramadan had now started as i always know that it is the time whereas Muslims will not eat or drink anything from 6AM until it is 6PM.
Nice to know more about Ramadan on this thread, it is informative.

We know when Ramadan starts according to Hijri date. We get sure about it by letting our high ranked religious men notice the moon or crescent and know when will Ramadan start or/and end.

By the way, it's not always from 6 AM to 6 PM, it's according to the sun's position in the sky. Sometimes we're fasting 14 hours, sometimes it's 12. And it may change rather than that too according to the position of the sun and according to day or night being long or short.
