We Always Needed a Police Presence
« on: August 01, 2012, 12:25:35 PM »
I lived in a pretty accepting city for other religions and for the LGBT community, but even so, we always needed to have a police presence when we had services on Friday night or Saturday morning. Even sadder was Sunday school classes for the kids (they learn Hebrew, history, ritual, etc). To see little kids walk past a police car parked by the front entrance.

And for high holidays we usually had about half a dozen officers.

To go visit the Community Center there is a gatehouse with guard who checks your ID and can ask to search your vehicle.

For the Jewish community. It's normal. Were non-Jews aware of what we have to go through on a weekly basis to remain safe when we meet in groups?

No.  You are lying.  I am going to be blunt because you are trying to be an internet martyr and it is just a sad and pathetic attempt to troll these boards.  Maybe this is true in some cases, but this isn't exclusive to Jews.  The Vatican has guards and the Sikh temple that was just attacked will as well but that has nothing to do with the religion as much as the situation.

I've worked as a paid Community Manager on other forums and know what a troll is. Starting off by calling the poster a liar and a pathetic troll will, in most cases, provoke a fight. I don't know if that was your purpose, but I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and respond to the rest of your post.

Sorry, but it's 100% true. Try Google to search for police protection during the High Holidays and attacks on Jewish synagogues and community centers. Wish it wasn't true. But it is what it is.

I never stated it was only true for Jews or exclusive to Jews. The same thing happens at Muslim mosques, Sikh temples, and Christians practicing in countries where they're not accepted. And is IS about the religion, not just the "situation" whatever that might mean. If anything, I would have hoped that other religions who have experienced likewise in the US would make comments on their respective board. Even coming here and saying: "It happens to us to...I wrote about it on...."

It wasn't meant as a poor-pity-party of one. I wanted people to THINK about whether religious practices is truly open in the US and realize that it's not and to chime in with their own experiences.

Sorry it seems to have struck a nerve with you because it was about "Jews."

It is absolutely not true for the Jewish community.  You are so full of crap.  You are stereotyping and it is no better than someone using a negative stereotype towards Jews.  I have been to multiple services in a synagogue and never had to have my car searched of have guards there.  Maybe your synagogue chooses to do this but it has nothing to do with your religion.  I went to religious services during high holidays and even went to funerals after the 9/11 attacks and never saw an officer doing anything other than directing traffic.

I am not provoking a fight but I am calling you out on this nonsense.  Jews are no more in danger than any other religion.

I'm really not sure how to debate someone who feels that making personal derogatory remarks is a valid way to argue or who bases reality on only his own personal experience or perception of that experience.

I already stated that it doesn't happen to all Jewish communities (though all the synagogues in my city, which is a very liberal area, had guards) and that Jews aren't the only ones who can be targeted for religious reasons. Sikhs were recently targeted in this country and Christians are targeted in certain areas of African and the Middle East.

You just seem to have a problem with the revelation that anti-Semitism (which isn't necessarily based on religions since being Jewish doesn't mean you practice Judaism) isn't a thing of the past. But then, neither is racism, ethnic cleansing, attacks on witches, or a myriad of offenses against others.

No doubt you'll just tell me I'm full of crap again so I'll leave it at that.

You are claiming you needed a police presence; meaning you had no choice but to have them there for fear of attack from some person or group.  How do you justify that?  Maybe your community CHOSE to keep guards there but you are taking Judaism and turning it into martyrdom.  You are eluding to the fact that practicing Jews are in danger, so much in fact that you needed to have armed guards are all services.

There were no personal or derogatory remarks made to you...telling you that you are full of crap and trying to make a cause out of nothing is hardly an attack.
