It is theoretically possible to learn meditation from a book. However most people who teach and practice meditation agree that a teacher can be an invaluable aid in learning a meditation technique and making sure it is practiced correctly. The beginner will usually have several questions which a teacher will be able to answer. Also, learning with a group of people, eg a meditation class, allows you to experience the benefit of meditating with a group of people. Most people find that they have some of their best meditations while meditating in a group, because there is a collective energy and focus present.

Various individuals and groups teach meditation. Some charge and some do not. Many different techniques are taught, some more spiritual in nature and others mainly concerned with stress-reduction and gaining a little peace of mind. As always, the important thing is finding what works for you.

Meditation can learn only by a trainer. Meditation books or video are not help to learn meditation properly. Because trainer teach many techniques and also with real time practice but in the meditation books and video are not sufficient to learn meditation.

yes i agree with these guys meditation has to be learned only through a tutor. say for exacmple you are learning from a book and started practicing it, which cannot be told that it is not possible for any human to absorb 100 %from a book. so you may start doing it only 75% right. so the mistake which you make while doing will cause advert effect. and will cause negative results in your body and mind

so have a good tutor and practice it in front of him...

Its better to join a meditation class which provides some good techniques to perform a good meditation. Meditation requires a regular practice to achieve desirable and good effects.

The most important point among this discussion is quoted by 'ashirtha', a person learning meditation may have some or the other doubts and questions to which an expert could answer correctly. The guidance of expert will lead you to a proper way and direction, this will also help in learning it faster and saves your time also.

I know that there are alot of people that say that you need a teacher or if you will a trainer to learn how to meditate but I strongly believe that you do not need any thing or any one to *LEARN* how to meditate . It is a state of mind, body , soul and heart . All you need to do is find your Zen Spot and focus on that .

If you need a long lasting effect, then its better to join a meditation class. The best thing with them that they provides you the environment needed to achieve a proper concentration during your meditation period.

I don't believe anyone needs a teacher to learn meditation as there are many sources readily available that can teach you the basics of whichever meditation you choose. It is of course advisable if you are the type of person who likes to be guided initially or needs help to focus; then you can join a class or ask for someone's help. Though I think that each person is capable of getting into a meditative state with pure intent and desire to reap the benefits of meditation.

As you can notice, I have never said there should not be any meditation Temples or classes. I simply said that it should not be considered as a need. One can still achieve a good mental state without going to a Temple. Are you trying to say that it is only those with a meditation teacher who can properly meditate?

No, I am not against self Medication. But I personally think that not everyone can performs this practice by himself in the current stressful conditions and environment surrounding us. A meditation class teaches us some basic methods to achieve a proper concentration in a fruitful environment.

you don't need a teacher to learn how to meditate. people go on about meditation "techniques", and i suppose if you want some guidance on how to do it that's fine, but i don't think it is necessary to find someone to train you in it before trying it yourself.
if all you see is 'suffering' then that is all you will feel. look for what is better in yourself and see only that.

The way that I think of meditation is that all that it is is a state of mind... am I right ??? is there some physical state when dealing with it as well.?

a state of mind. however with that changed level of awareness how you are 'aware' of your body can also seem altered.

some claim that there are side benefits, such as reduced stress levels lead to increased general wellbeing.
