How can I start meditating?
« on: July 26, 2012, 12:21:07 PM »
I've heard from many people that meditating helps one build spiritual and inner strength. But I'm really new to meditation and am confused by so many theories. Could you guys offer me some suggestions for an easy start?

Start off by meditating 5 minutes per day for the first 7-10 days .. To keep the clutter out of your mind focus specifically on your breathing. Breathe in through the nose, hold the breath for a second, then breathe out, slowly and consistently through your mouth. When random thoughts pop into your head, and they will, go back to your breathing. Focus on the incoming breath, then on the outgoing breath or exhaling.

After awhile, you will begin to look forward to your periods of meditation. That is why I have to be more consistent with mine because when I set aside 10-15 minutes in the morning, I actually begin to enjoy the quiet time.

I listen to "Soundscapes" via my Cable network, it's non-commercial music, a mix of "new age, atmospheric, and world-positive music" that is very soothing. Actually switched over to it and a song called, "Temple Of The Sun" is playing ... very melodic, soft, and easy to get into your meditation (next song up, its called "Flight," after that, "The Memory of Trees," then "Enigma" .. four songs have played while I put together my reply).

I was never a fan of Mozart until recently, his music is very good to meditate to. If you have ever watched the movie, "Shawshank Redemption" with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, when Andy (Tim) locked the guard in the bathroom and locked himself in the library. The song he played on the PA system for all those hardcore inmates to hear was, "The Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart. Morgan Freeman who starred in and narrated the movie, stated, "I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it." Mozart's music even softened the hearts of criminals .. so you know it would be fantastic to meditate to.. I did research the song, "Marriage of Figaro" and even though it is melodic and soothing, the opera singers were actually singing about a philandering husband..

You can also go with no music at all, some people prefer total silence. I tried the total silence but it's sort of disrupted when I hear something outside, so I started listening to music..

Hope this helps..

There are many different ways to meditate.  Some people listen to soft music and let their mind wander, some people have a very quiet place where they try to let their minds go blank, some people listen to a meditation cd or recording to help them relax.  You ill just have to explore the different options and see which one is right for you.

Here's something you can try.

Relax yourself, close your eyes, and sit quietly and comfortably somewhere peaceful. Imagine that out of the darkness a beautiful light appears way off in the distance. Slowly the beautiful light comes closer until it completely engulfs you. Feel all the love that comes from it. Now imagine an altar appearing before you. Place all the things that are troubling you on the altar. Now watch as the altar fades away into the perfect light. At this point imagine that you are no longer a body but have actually become the light so that there is no place where you end or the light begins. The light in now all encompassing. Nothing exists outside of it. Feel free to remain in this state for as long as you like.

This is a way of giving your burdens over to God, or "Spirit", or "Source", if you prefer, and declaring that there is nothing that comes before God in your life.

Hi,
the easiest start would be to find something that you love and meditate on the love that you feel. Just sit in this feeling of love for as long as you are able to. Just feel the love. It doesn't matter what the object of your love is. It may be an image of god, a photo of a loved one, a photo of a place you had a wonderful time at, an image of ....whatever, etc. Just decouple the feeling of love from the image and realize that the love resides inside of you and not inside the image/photo.
Be well.

I have read some psychic development books a one the best book that I've read is the "A Course in Mind Power" because I learned a lot of information about psychic and psychic development.

Hi, it's very easy to start meditating, and I agree that's it's very helpful and invigorating for your body, mind, and spirit. I usually just wake up early in the morning to do it, and sometimes I play peaceful music to help me into a deeper psychic meditative state. I start with deep breathing exercises, like holding my breath in, count to 3, and then let out. This slows the heart rate and relaxes muscle tension.
