MEDITATION FOR SELF-IMPROVEMENT
« on: July 12, 2009, 09:55:09 AM »
I just read in the Meditation news section that a recent study shows how Meditation can make people more alert. I kind of agree with the study, basing from my experience.. ever since I started meditating there's really an improvement with my sensitivity.

Of course you will gain such positive effects upon doing meditation. But the 'good' meditation is not usually aimed to reach the physical or mental purpose. Instead, it is aimed to reach the spiritual purpose, unification with the Supreme Consciousness.

I expect it isn't an either/or. Spiritual betterment, if it is worth anything, goes hand-in-hand with mental and emotional betterment.

Ellbell, can you tell us more about how meditation has helped you? I've never been very good at meditation in and of itself - I've only reached that state via sustained writing practice, or a nice hour or so at the spinning wheel making sock yarn, or on a long bike ride in which I try to "gear down" my brain and watch the grass and cracks in concrete go by so that I don't get frustrated with how long it takes me to get to the end of my route. I feel like it's beneficial for me to reach a meditative state of mind with these activities, but I wish I could get better at "simply meditating." I'd love to hear you talk a little about your own practice, if you're willing.

Mage, the description of your activities reminds me of the "flow" experience I've read about before.

In that case, the person engaged in a constructive activity becomes very focused and productive and can lose track of time in that state. Does that ring a bell with you?

I experience it sometimes when work sessions are going well.

Of course we can get both kinds of benefits. While we are on the way to reach the spiritual goal, our physical, mental and emotional wealth and capacity is improved by the practice of meditation. I mean to say that the later is not the goal but the positive effects of meditation.

actually focus is different from medoitation... focussing to a point gives a  concentration improvement..incase of meditation it dosent deal with your focus- its about the concentration whic will get to have improvement in your brain's capability of sensing and concentrating. unless you practice a special meditation and special way, you may not have any betterment in spirutual process... so do not go and learn from commercial teachers if you are looking for spirtual betterment. this is my personal opinion

Meditation helps to boost your immune system to enhance general health, correction of spinal dysfunctions, motor movement coordination, vision and hearing problems, migraines and almost all health challenges.
