Meditative music (not rock-n-roll !) can help in establishing a meditative atmosphere. Also, some people find meditation relatively easy but find that the hard thing is to actually get themselves to sit down and start their meditation. Music can help make this easier. Some people use music quite often while others prefer silent meditation and never use it.

In earlier stage people get bore to do meditation. So they use music to do meditation without getting bore. Music also helps to relax your mind to sit for long time. People always prefer melody music while meditating and also keep your mind calm.

Music can be very powerful in associating with memories, or conveying emotions even with melody and without the singing of lyrics.

I can't speak for others, but I think I'd be inclined to try meditating with music... And I'd probably choose something like classical in the baroque vein.

Everyone is different and have their own preferences. Like how some meditate with their eyes open instead of closed. For me, I only use music when I need help relaxing and focusing. Of course I'm not going to play the music I listen to such as thrash metal or old school hip hop, classical music helps. Although I do know some people who buy those cds to get sounds from the ocean, the forrest, the city, etc to help them meditate.

Music can help us to drive our mind to focus on the object of meditation. But it should be done only in our early stages of meditation. It is more advisable that during meditation, we are hearing nothing, seeing nothing, tasting nothing, smelling nothing. In other words, we withdraw our mental power from our external organs to our mind. The mental power of concentration is then focused on our goal of meditation.

The reason that people have music on when they are in meditation mode is to relax them even more and put their mind at peace
